We work with local organizations like Butte College Sustainability Resource Center, the Organic Vegetable Project of Chico State University Farm, Fungi Perfecti, Redwood Seed company and others providing classes, hands-on workshops and Permaculture Design Courses. Our main goal in our educational program is to provide a safe container where participants get to come into leadership and share tools with others.

September 9th & 10th

Mushroom Inoculation & propagation Saturday & Sunday 2604 W Sacramento Ave, Chico CA 10am-4pm Registration 9.30am-10am This is a hands-on workshop Learn about how to grow and propagate mushrooms at home in logs, straw bags, coffee grounds, grain cultures, & garden beds. We will also learn how to do tisure cultures from a real mushroom and how to create liquid cultures that you can keep in the fridge for long time. We will start the day with a 2hr lecture where we will learn about the healing & growing properties of Shiitaki, Maitake, Reishi, Lions Main, Chicken of the woods, Turkey Tail, Oysters... All the inoculations that we do in garden beds are implementing directly a REAL PERMACULTURE DESIGN for this property. We have hand outs for this class with details of the mushrooms, growing needs, properties, recipes, teas, inoculation steps that you can take home. Previous registration required to get these hand outs. Hands-on activities include log inoculations, spawn propagation in coffee grounds or straw bags, grain inoculations & garden bed inoculations. All participants will go home with an inoculated log/bag to start growing them at home. Growing mushrooms is never been so easy & fun.
You can take home more inoculated logs or grain bags by donation: 1 log/bag $10, 2 logs/bags $15, 3 logs/bags $20... Hands-on activities: This is a big day we recommend you to have a good breakfast and come with comfortable clothes, good shoes & a full water bottle. During the day you would make a compost pile, create a super potent compost tea, make a bocashi pile,create your own rice EM. And then on Sunday you will learn companion planting, irrigation systems, mulching & path creation, different techniques for intensive planting and best location, food forest incorporation, create a small pond and so much more..

Organic Fertilizers & Drought Tolerant Edible Mandala Gardens
2604 W Sacramento Avenue, Chico CA 10am-4pm Registration 10am-10.30am This is a hands-on workshop During this 2 days you will learn about companion planting, tree & plant guilds, low water usage techniques, passive irrigation, none dig gardens, soil building techniques, composting methods, compost piles & compost tea, bio intensive planting & how to read your specific landscape, making it into the most productive food, flower & herb zones. On Saturday we will learn how to read the land, marking the areas and pathways, creating compost piles, compost trenches & pathways & inoculating the space with compost tea. During Sunday we will build none dig gardens, mandala gardens, vertical gardens, pallet gardens and so much more during the second day. All these activities will be directly implementing a REAL PERMACULTURE DESIGN for this property. We have hand outs for this class with some easy to follow steps on making these gardens, companion planting list, soil nutrients... Previous registration required to get these hand outs. Hands-on activities: creating compost piles, compost trenches, compost tea & bocashi fermentations for the understory of your mandala garden, you will build a none dig mandala garden, using companion planting, integrating tree guilds, setting low water irrigation systems, using an A-frame, mapping the area, reading the zones and sectors & using as many passive irrigation techniques as the land allows us.
All in a small intensive design that would open up your food production in a very small area. We recommend having a big breakfast before the class as it is a very physical day. Bring your own lunch & note book. Food Forest. Urban Farming. Two full days of composting methods, soil building techniques, bio intensive planting techniques, water retention techniques and food forest integration in your front/backyard urban farm design. Saturday & Sunday 1824 Myrtle st Oakland - CA 10am-4pm Door Registration 9.30am-10am This is a hands-on workshop Get ready for the growing season. This is a great workshop to learn how to utilize materials around you and make amazing organic fertilizers that you can apply to your vegetable, herb & flower garden, perennials and trees. Saturday you will learn how to build soil, farm carbon back into the soil, create rich water retaining soils and bring the biology up for plants to be able to get all the water and nutrients that they need with compost piles, liquid compost teas & bocashi fermentations. We will be building swales for the perenial crops to be planted the next day so they are water resilient & passively irrigated when there is rain. Then on Sunday you will learn companion planting, the best location for annuals, perennials / trees & how to incorporate pollinator and insect repelent plants, how to utilize paths and edges for best use of space and composting methods, how to do intense planting or bio intensive techniques, how to incorporate a food forest area into your small front/back yard farm and if we have time we will be building a small pond for pollinators & lizards in our food forest/planting area! All the activities will directly implement a real PERMACULTURE DESIGN for this property. You will see the maps for this property the first day and do a land assesment of the space. Permaculture Digital Mapping Design Chico State University Farm - Horticulture class by the greenhouses 311 Nicholas C. Schouten Ln, Chico, CA 95928 10am-4pm Door Registration 9.30am-10am This is a hands-on workshop If you have already done a Permaculture Design Certification Course & are ready for the next step then this is for you. In this intensive you would develop further in the skills of mapping & designing in depth using google earth, photoshop, illustrator & other programs. Each participant would work in their own property design. You would go home with the skills necessary to do layering maps, place roads, buildings, orchids, animal areas, water flows etc.. Water & messuring the landscape 2604 W Sacramento Ave, Chico, CA 10am to 4pm Drought proof your landscape & dreams by learning how to use surveying tools, topographic maps, google earth, the A frame & other measuring tools to place your paths, gardens & orchids in the best locations working with water and contour lines in your landscape that can capture water in swales, ponds, rain gardens & other water features. This workshop is focusing on permaculture designers, landscapers, farmers, ranchers, land owners and people who would like to work with water systems in their properties. This workshop can be applied in small urban properties & large scale rural properties. How to create base maps?
Chico State University Farm Chico 10am-4pm Registration 10am-10.30am This is a hands-on workshop If you already know about Permaculture Principles & Ethics and would like to know the A,B, C steps to create base maps for your property this is for you! Bring the measures of your property, front yard, back yard or any land that you would like to use for this two days of drawing & planning. If you have already contour maps bring them too. You would learn about how to take mesures with google earth, create a flow map, a sector map & zones maps. This is the perfect knowledge for those who are ready to learn applied design and do it all by hand. Bring your own lunch & note book. Previous registration & payment for us to prepare your handouts.
